Fit in fun on Friday!

While mom and dad may be tempted to leave the kids at home or in the gym daycare during workouts, family fitness can bring families closer together while reinforcing the importance of exercise.

Fall is the season for charity walk-a-thons, a great activity for the entire family. Community walk-a-thons are a great opoprtunity to participate for a good cause. Strollers and young walkers are usually welcome. For families with older children or grandchildren, more competitive 3K or 5K events are also available. Check out your local charities for upcoming events and get the whole family involved in exercising for a cause!

It’s Friday again, so make sure you fit fitness into your weekend plans.

As the fall season falls upon us, it’s a great time to enjoy the outdoor weather. Gather the family for a picnic at the park where you can walk the trails, rent bicycles, or perhaps give your arms a work-out in a canoe or kayak. You can burn calories while enjoying some quality time with the family.

Fit in Fun on Friday is my weekly blog on ways that you can stay fit with the family. Here are a few ideas for the weekend, rain or shine:

As fall approaches and the weather begins to change, it’s a great time to enjoy a hike or walk through your neighborhood, local parks, trails or the beach. A three mile walk at a leisurely pace can burn up to 300 calories per hour. Take this opportunity to establish a family exercise routine and add daily walks to your family calendar.

If the weather is not in your favor, it’s time to get creative with your family fitness plans. There are plenty of options for indoor fun right in your own home. How about a family dance party? Let everyone choose their favorite dance songs and get your groove on.  You can burn approximately 300 calories while dancing at an aerobic pace so burn baby burn!

Remember, combining exercise and a balanced diet will help your family develop good habits to support a healthy lifestyle.

Fit in Fun on Friday is my weekly blog on how you and your family can enjoy family activities AND keep fit and healthy.

A weekend bike ride is a fun activity that you can enjoy with the whole family. Find a local park, cruise the neighborhood or local bike trails. Just a 30 minute leisurely bike ride can burn more than 130 calories for adults, depending on your weight.

Remember to wear a helmet, sunscreen and ride safely!

It’s Friday again, time to fit in fun for the weekend!

The most popular game in Florida is golf! Try putt-putt golf for the family, or take on an 18-hole challenge if you dare! It’s great exercise! Many courses offer summer specials, so you can enjoy the course on a budget. Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated in the heat.

Enjoy!

Keeping your family active is especially challenging as kids go back-to-school. With the pressures of homework and busy schedules, it’s easy to fall into the routine of watching television or playing video games after school.

It’s important that families be active to help reduce stress, maintain a healthy weight and live a more balanced lifestyle. Here are some ideas for keeping you and your family active:

•Play catch (football, baseball, softball, or Frisbee)
•Make chores such as vacuuming, sweeping or raking, your chance to be active
•Go for family walks after meal times
•Limit recreational screen time (television, video games, and computer) to less than 2 hours per day

I recommend scheduling regular times for activity throughout the week so it becomes a habit, rather than an afterthought.

Making weekend plans? Be sure to fit in some fun fitness activities that the whole family can enjoy.

It’s hot, it’s summer, cool off and take a swim! Enjoy a dip in the pool or hit the beach!

Swimming is one of the safest, most effective forms of exercise and recruits all of the major muscle groups. Be sure to stay hydrated by drinking fluids, especially when swimming for extended periods in the heat. Beginning swimmers should be well-supervised and should consider swim lessons by a certified instructor. Check your local colleges and community centers for a list of instructors and locations.

Be safe and be fit with friends and family!
